eSIM explained

A SIM card, without the card.

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into a compatible device. A mobile plan can be downloaded securely to it, so you can connect without inserting or replacing a physical SIM.

The important distinction

The eSIM stays. Plans can change.

The embedded hardware inside your phone is often called an eUICC. The downloadable plan stored on it is an eSIM profile. That profile contains the information your device needs to authenticate with a mobile network.

You can usually store several profiles and choose which one is active. Exact limits and dual-SIM behaviour vary by device and market.

Physical SIM

A removable card

  • Inserted into a physical SIM tray
  • Moved manually between compatible phones
  • Can be lost or damaged outside the device

eSIM

Built into the device

  • Plans are downloaded digitally
  • Switch profiles through device settings
  • Keep a primary line alongside travel data

Common questions

What travellers need to know

Do all phones support eSIM?

No. Support depends on the model, region and sometimes the mobile network that originally sold the device.

Can I keep my usual number?

Often, yes. A dual-SIM phone can keep the primary line active while using the eSIM for mobile data.

Does an eSIM need Wi-Fi?

You normally need an internet connection to download and install the profile. Install before travelling where possible.
