Using a travel eSIM in China: what to know before you go
Prepare mobile data for China, understand international traffic routing and avoid relying on unverified promises about access to particular websites or apps.
Traffic routing matters
Some travel eSIM packages route mobile data through an exit location outside mainland China. That can make the connection behave differently from a local mainland SIM, but the exit country alone is not a permanent guarantee that every website or app will remain available.
How Wisp selects China plans
Wisp only exposes packages with a reviewed traffic exit. When equivalent options exist, Singapore-routed packages are preferred before advertised network generation, operator coverage, post-allowance speed and price are compared.
Prepare essential services in advance
- Install the eSIM and save its instructions before departure.
- Download offline maps and copies of booking details.
- Make sure important accounts have recovery methods that do not depend on a single app.
- Keep payment, transport and accommodation information available offline.
- Do not describe any mobile connection as guaranteed access to every service.
Expect network conditions to vary
Coverage, congestion, device support and policy changes can all affect the experience. A plan’s 5G label means that 5G is supported where the device and local network make it available; it is not a minimum-speed promise.
