When should I install and activate a travel eSIM?
Understand the difference between eSIM installation and activation, and prepare your travel data without starting the plan too early.
Installation and activation are different
Installation downloads the eSIM profile to your phone. Activation starts the plan according to the package rules. Some plans begin when they first connect to a supported network; others can begin when the profile is installed.
The safest preparation routine
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked.
- Read the selected plan’s activation rule.
- Install while you still have reliable Wi-Fi.
- Label the new line Wisp so it is easy to identify.
- Leave the travel line off until the plan instructions say to use it.
- On arrival, select Wisp for mobile data and enable roaming on that line when required.
Do not delete a profile while troubleshooting
Many eSIM installation codes are intended for one successful download. Deleting an installed profile can make it difficult or impossible to reinstall without support. If setup appears stuck, take a screenshot and contact support before removing anything.
Prepare before the travel day
Installing at the airport adds pressure and makes you dependent on public Wi-Fi. Preparing at home gives you time to verify the profile, save the installation details and understand which settings to change when you land.
