Using mobile data in Dubai and the UAE
Prepare maps, transport apps and mobile data for Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and understand why an eSIM cannot change local app restrictions.
Mobile data is useful from the airport onwards
Dubai’s transport system combines metro, buses, trams, taxis and marine services. Data helps with maps, approved booking apps and itinerary changes, while saved hotel and airport-transfer details provide a sensible backup.
Prepare the arrival essentials
- Install the eSIM over reliable Wi-Fi and read its activation rule.
- Save the hotel address and airport transfer instructions offline.
- Download any transport or itinerary apps you intend to use before departure.
- Keep the normal SIM’s data roaming disabled unless deliberately needed.
- Use trusted Wi-Fi for large downloads and software updates.
An eSIM does not override local app rules
The UAE regulates internet voice and video calling services. TDRA publishes guidance and a current list of approved services. A travel eSIM provides a data connection; it cannot guarantee that a particular calling feature or application is permitted or available.
Choose data around transport and sharing
Maps, messaging and taxi bookings usually need much less data than video calls, cloud photo backup and streaming. If the trip includes frequent calls or uploads, compare a larger allowance and confirm that the service you plan to use is currently available.
